Harmonic Minor Scale

Harmonic minor is the natural minor scale with a raised seventh degree. The reason for the raising is harmonic: in a minor key, you want a major V7 chord (not a minor v7) to get the strong dominant pull toward the tonic. Raising the seventh creates that leading tone — the half-step pull from the seventh up to the root — while keeping all the other minor scale notes intact. Classical minor key cadences run on harmonic minor harmony.

Construction

A natural minor: A B C D E F G A
A harmonic minor: A B C D E F G# A
                               ↑ raised 7th

Formula: 1 2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 7

Step pattern: W - H - W - W - H - A2 - H
(A2 = augmented second, between ♭6 and raised 7th)

The augmented second between the sixth and seventh (F and G# in A harmonic minor) is the scale's most distinctive feature and its most exotic-sounding interval. It's what gives harmonic minor its slightly Middle Eastern or classical character.

Key Scales

A harmonic minor: A B C D E F G# A
E harmonic minor: E F# G A B C D# E
D harmonic minor: D E F G A B♭ C# D
G harmonic minor: G A B♭ C D E♭ F# G
B harmonic minor: B C# D E F# G A# B

Why It Exists: The V7 in Minor

In A natural minor, the V chord is Em7:
E G B D — all minor scale notes, no leading tone

Raise the 7th (G → G#):
E chord becomes E7: E G# B D
                        ↑
Now a major chord (major 3rd) with leading tone

E7 → Am (G# → A is a half step — strong resolution)

The classical V7-i cadence in minor requires this raised seventh. Every Baroque, Classical, and Romantic composer used harmonic minor for cadences in minor keys. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven — the entire tradition of Western classical music uses harmonic minor for its cadential strength.

Characteristic Modes

The modes of harmonic minor are less commonly discussed than those of the major scale but include some important sounds:

  • Mode 1 (harmonic minor) — over Im or ImM7 chords. The raised 7th creates the characteristic augmented sound.
  • Mode 5 (Phrygian dominant) — over V7 in a minor key. See the Phrygian Dominant article.
  • Mode 7 (altered diminished) — over the diminished 7th chord built on the raised 7th degree. Dense, chromatic, useful for jazz.

In Jazz

Harmonic minor over a Im chord in jazz gives a darker, more classical sound than Dorian. Over a sustained Am7 or AmM7 (minor major seventh) chord, the raised seventh creates a unique, slightly eerie quality. Yngwie Malmsteen built his entire neoclassical metal style on harmonic minor. Django Reinhardt used it frequently in his gypsy jazz playing.
